Research summary
A novel cognitive assessment (measuring abilities such as learning and attention), for adults with intellectual or learning disabilities (ID/LD), is being developed by the researcher and supervisor. The aim for the new assessment is to be more sensitive to the range of abilities of people with ID/LD, and therefore to be useful in detecting possible dementia, and telling apart the different kinds of dementia, that may affect them; for example Alzheimer's disease versus vascular dementia. The assessment must also be engaging, to interest people being assessed; not too long or too short; and not require specialist equipment, so that it is useful for NHS settings and services.
For this part of the assessment development, we are asking people with ID/LD to share their opinions on a pilot/draft of the assessment. The participants will be 'experts by experience', being consulted on the assessment and how to develop it further. We will show participants the main parts of the assessment, and ask them what they think. Are the materials engaging; does any part look too hard, or too easy; are there parts that they don't like or don't understand; do they have any suggestions? Participants will not undertake the assessment: they will be shown the materials and instructions, and given example questions, only to describe the assessment procedures.
After meeting with individual participants, and summarising their opinions, we will then invite participants to join us for one or more meetings, where we will meet as small groups. In these meetings we will share what has been said so far, think about any differences in opinion there may be, and agree on the best ways to take the assessment forward.REC name
