Research summary
This research aims to understand the key factors and processes that promote patient and clinician engagement in clinical trials, with a specific focus on East London. This will lead to a greater understanding of how to run successful clinical trials, so that their results can produce a tangible health benefit to a local population. This research is necessary because enrolment, patient engagement, and post-trial implementation of study results into routine care are all recurrent problems in the UK. The researcher wishes to understand the motivations for why people get involved with clinical trials, how they are retained, and what is their experience and use post-trial. This will help to identify factors and constraints which are unique to East London, and also which may be replicable/preventable elsewhere. Therefore, this study aims to not only aid the development of trial recruitment strategies, but also support the diffusion of an effective approach to the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease to other contexts in the UK. In order to do this, this research will carry out trial observation and semi structured interviews at the William Harvey Heart Centre.
