Research summary
The overarching aim of this project is to develop a low-cost and wireless respiratory rate sensor for early detection of opioid overdose. Support and care staff can provide the device to those who are at high risk of overdose. The device remotely and continuously monitors the respiratory information of users and automatically warns them once an early sign of an overdose is detected. If the user remains irresponsive, the device alerts any responder agreed upon with the user (e.g., family or volunteer communities/charities) for further support. The aim is for the closest potential responder with naloxone (an opioid antidote) to attend the call.
We will work directly with the target population on the co-design of the device with support from our test bed partner, West of Scotland NHS Innovation Hub. We will co-design the device for maximum acceptance and usability among the target group of users. For this, we will conduct usability testing and interviews with people who use opioids and are attending the NHS safer drug consumption facility in Glasgow.
We will explain participants the purpose of the research and the device and we will show them a physical prototype. Even though this will be a non-working prototype, participants will be asked to put it on while they are in the facility and to take it off themselves. We will then interview them asking them about the experience. They will be asked to imagine themselves using it for a few days and to give their opinion on its ease of use, any inconvenients they might find and how they think it could be improved. We aim to interview a minimum of 10 people during a 2 week period.REC name
