Research summary
Food allergy represents a global health problem which has become much common in the last 20 years. Exposure to these allergens can lead to serious and sometimes life threatening symptoms (anaphylaxis). There is currently no treatment recommended for food allergy for routine clinical use in guidelines. In addition, the development of new immunotherapy treatments for food allergy requires special care to reduce possible dangerous side effects due to systemic reactions. In order to ensure the safety of patients in future clinical trials, a good understanding of the mechanism of action of new immunotherapeutic products is crucial. The purpose of this study is therefore to test if new treatments able to reprogram immune cells to induce tolerance for the three main food allergens (peanut, cow’s milk, egg white) while not inducing an allergic reaction. Blood from healthy subjects and patients allergic to either peanut, cow’s milk and egg white will be collected at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and analysed at Imperial College London in order to study the mechanism of action of these new treatments.
