Research summary
Infections within the abdominal cavity (intra-abdominal infections, IAI) affect 10% of patients on intensive care and are associated with 30-60% mortality. Unlike many other types of serious infection, IAIs are often managed not just with antibiotics, but also with surgery or other interventional techniques. Multi-drug resistance (MDR) is an increasing concern and risk factors for MDR in IAI have not been studied. Similarly there are no large international studies of the epidemiology of IAI.
