  • Research summary

Women across the globe deserve access to high quality sexual and reproductive healthcare, including abortion care. Characteristics that define "quality" for women seeking abortion care are poorly studied and understood. In order to assess and improve abortion services, valid and simple tools to measure quality and that reflect service-users' perspectives are needed. We aim to explore women’s perceptions and experiences of the quality of abortion care in Britain. We will recruit women who have received an abortion at British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) within the previous 6 months to participate in structured in-depth interviews. Interviews may be conducted in person or remotely by telephone or video link. We will explore their experiences of the abortion service at each point in the care pathway from first contact through to discharge, their perspectives on what contributed to and detracted from the service meeting their definitions of quality, and their reflections on current measures of quality of care. Interviews will be recorded and transcribed. We will use content analysis to generated themes to inform the design of a quality assessment tool that can be validated in a future study.
