  • Research summary

Borderline personality disorder is a serious disorder that can lead to
prolonged psychiatric hospitalisation and suicide. Patients often find
hospitalisation aversive but increase their self harm at the time of leaving.
Some therefore become chronically hospitalised. Home treatment is usually tried before or as an alternative to hospital admission. This study will test whether
the addition of a brief therapy to home treatment will lead to better clinical outcomes and reduce hospitalisation. A range of
validated and meaningful clinical outcome measures will be used. These
include measures of severity, global functioning, empowerment, and quality
of life. The randomised controlled trial will be carried out in collaboration with the King's Clinical Trials Unit with methodological and statistical expertise. A health economist will evaluate the costs of both treatment approaches including costs to families.
