Research summary
Illnesses and deaths caused by alcohol use are rising in the UK, placing strain on the National Health Service (NHS). A small group of people who are often admitted to hospital for alcohol problems use a large amount of NHS resources. Many people in this group also have complex needs that make it difficult for them to attend their health appointments, such as disabilities, housing and financial issues, or mental and physical health problems. This means they are more likely to use emergency care.
Alcohol Assertive Outreach Treatment (AAOT) aims to reduce the pressure on emergency care by making it easier for people in this group to get the care they need. AAOT does this by working with people in the community over a longer time period, having a smaller caseload, and helping people access health and social services they need more quickly. This study aims to evaluate the implementation of the AAOT service within South London. By interviewing people who have used the service, as well as staff and stakeholders, we will find out what works well about AAOT services and where they can be improved. This will help make sure that AAOT is meeting the needs of people who use the service in the best way possible. Anyone who has worked with or used the AAOT service in South London and Maudsley (SLaM) Trust for longer than two months would be eligible to take part. Taking part involves a single 60 minute confidential, one to one semi structured interview with a researcher about your experiences of AAOT. Staff will also be offered a focus group. This study is funded by the Applied Research Collaboration South London (Alcohol Theme) and will last until April 2026.
