Research summary
This is an observational study asking for patients, and healthcare professionals opinions on the features that they want to see in an APP to support their self-management.Qualitative interviews and quantitative measurements with questionnaires will inform the development and refining of an APP for asthma self-management and specifically provide insights into attractive and adherent features.
There are three streams for data collection and analysis -
A. In a sequential, iterative process, three cohorts of approximately five people with asthma will use the APP for one month and provide interviews before (to observe initial usability and explore ‘attractive’ features) and after the 1-month trial (to explore practical experience and ‘adherent’ features). Healthcare professionals from the five participating practices will be interviewed for their views on the practicalities of using the APP and explore any impact this has had on consultations and delivery of self-management support.
B. Up to 100 patients will be introduced to the APP by their asthma nurse in a routine review and invited to download and use the APP for three months. The APP will encourage them to see the asthma nurse for completion of the personalised asthma action plan. During these three months, they can send enquiries and instant comments to uMotif technical supports or our forum. They will be asked to fill in short questionnaires before and after using the APP.
C. Up to 200 people living in UK who come across our APP’s information in the market (our research site site, google play /Apple APP store, friends of participants in streams A&B) will download and apply to be registered to use the APP for three months . During those three months, they can send enquiry and instant comments to uMotif technical supports or our forum. With consent, we will track their usage data and request completion of questionnaires before and after using the APP.REC name
