  • Research summary

Around one fifth of the NHS dental budget is spent on managing dental caries (tooth decay) and its after effects, with tooth extraction being common place. Poor dental experiences at an early age can also lead to life-long dental anxiety and poor patterns of attendance as well as further health and cost consequences.

North Yorkshire & Humber NHS Area Team have been supported by the Department of Health to develop an In-Practice Prevention (IPP) programme that supports the roll-out of 10,000 Preventive Care Pathway across the region based on evidence based guidelines (Delivering Better Oral Health: DBOH, 2013). As part of this NHS project, family dentists in the region will be paid for each child that receives care. This initiative is being led by the Local Professional Network in the region and aligns to the NHS Five Year Forward View to radically improve prevention and public health in children (Five Year Forward, 2014).

Researchers at the Bangor University have been asked to carry out an evaluation of the pathway, part of which (relevant to this LREC application) involves distributing a survey to parents to help measure its impact by providing a snapshot of their child’s oral health at two time-points - baseline and between 9-12 months later.
