  • Research summary

Aim: To answer the following research questions
    1) How many people would like to receive the arts therapies in mental health care and in the general population?
    2) Which of the four arts modalities would they choose and why?
1)3) Which characteristics are related to preferences in each group?

Background: Some studies have asked patients about the experiences of taking part in the arts therapies, but no one has investigated how many people know about the arts therapies before taking part in them.

Design and methods: This short survey will find out how many people know about the arts therapies and which of the arts modalities (music, dance-movement, drama and art) they would choose if they were given these options. I will ask people who are attending clinics in secondary mental health services, people in the general community and I will share the survey on social media to try and get as many responses as possible.

Analysis: I will look at peoples’ answers to the survey to find out which arts therapies are the most popular and why participants made those choices. I will also look at whether there are any groups of people who are more likely to choose each modality.

Implications: This research will help to understand the reasons why people have different preferences and how much they know about the treatment options available to them. Once we know more about this, we can provide people with all of the information they need to support them to make informed choices about their treatment.
