Research summary
The National Burn Care Review (2001) raised awareness of the need for improvements in burn care provision. One aspect that has received less attention is the systematic assessment of patients’ experiences of their care, scarring and psychosocial functioning after burn. Yet this information is needed alongside traditional audit of mortality/morbidity rates and surgical outcomes to inform future commissioning and the provision of care.
Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) ensure that patients’ views are included in the assessment of services and treatment decision making. The NHS Next Stage Review highlighted the importance of using PROMs to evaluate healthcare services and to inform commissioning and regulatory decision making. However the National Burn Care Review highlighted that PROMs are not routinely collected in burn care and the development of new patient reported outcome measures for this population was a priority.
Therefore in collaboration with burn patients, families and health professionals, we have developed three burn-specific PROMs, one for children (aged 5 and under- parent reported), one for adolescents (aged 12-17) and one for adults (aged 18 plus). The present study will test these newly developed PROMs with adolescent and adult burn patients/parents and will involve patients completing an online or paper-version of the PROM. The results will be quantitatively analysed and the PROMs will be shortened and refined based on the results.
