Research summary
The objective of the study is to isolate bacteria from spinal disc tissue obtained from patients with lower back pain who are undergoing spinal surgery. There is a growing body of scientific evidence to suggest that bacteria are implicated in lower back pain. The bacteria will be used in microbial studies to better understand lower back pain and evaluate potential treatments.
Eligible patients are those who have had lower back pain for greater than 6 months and are undergoing spinal surgery in the UK. Patients will provide informed consent to donate disc tissue which is removed as part of the spinal surgery, which would normally be discarded.
Persica Pharmaceuticals Ltd is funding this work.
