  • Research summary

At present, mental health services address only treatment of mental illnesses. No emphasis is given for improving mental wellbeing. Positive mental health empowers a person to incorporate the skills necessary for personal fulfilment, satisfaction and contribute to overall mental well-being. It encourages positive emotions such as contentment and happiness, rather than just the absence of mental illness. In general people take care of their ‘bodies’ and not much care is given to their ‘minds’ until it deteriorates. This is equally true among the general population as well as health professionals. There is a need for addressing positive mental health among our patients as well as mental health professionals.

Our objective is to uncover what our patients know about positive emotions and positive mental health, if they get any input/ help in this regard and also if they do any practices at all for their own mental wellbeing. It also explores the knowledge, attitude and practices on Positive emotions and Positive mental health among mental health professionals (psychiatrists and in patient and community psychiatric nurses) and General Practitioners. We also assess if they had any training on positive mental health and positive emotions in their primary or postgraduate training. We also explore factors associated with positive mental health. Data collection is by a self-administered questionnaire collected anonymously in clinic settings for both patients and professionals.

This research will inform us on our service users’ and primary care and secondary care professionals’ awareness and practices in taking care of their mind in order to improve their positive mental health. It will allow us to develop new services in delivering a holistic service which aims at, not only treating mental illness, but improving mental wellbeing and positive mental health of our patients.
