  • Research summary

This research will be an exploration of the potential of maternity service users to raise safety concerns and harness an appropriate response from health care providers to give optimal outcomes in the woman’s and her infant’s health, including awareness of and ability to report signs and symptoms of a deterioration of health. The approach taken will be a qualitative approach involving narrative interviews with a semi structured component, organisational observations, and documentary analysis.
Currently there is little evidence that explores the possibility of how maternity service users can contribute to their own safety when there is an escalation of care required.
The findings will be used to provide a basis for a future pilot study regarding an effective tool for maternity service users’ to communicate with the health care providers when an escalation of care is required.
