Research summary
To evaluate client experience relating to mammography and compare pain scores between different groups of patients. It will involve face to face patient interviews with clients that have had previous mammography at the study site (Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care Trust). The data will be specific to the study site and relate to patients undertaking annual surveillance mammography. The pilot data will be used to form a care plan for future attendances by the clients.
The study is a quantitative assessment of pain, comparing pain scores between 2 mammograms undertaken by the same mammographer to standardise technique. Pain will be assessed using a validated numerical 11 point pain score for ease of use. Each client will feedback 3 times during the care event:
1. Retrospectively from previous experience
2. Actual pain, if any, during planned mammogram
3. Assessment of any prolonged pain, 1 week after mammogram by telephone interviewIn addition to this a correlation of pain between breast cup size will be made following a standardised bra measurement undertaken by a trained bra fitter.
An assessment of breast density will be made by two independent film readers under standard viewing conditions.REC name
