Research summary
The study will investigate the value of screening for diabetic retinopathy in a cohort of older people on the diabetic register, aged 75 years and over. We will recruit the cohort from Heart of England NHS Trust Diabetic Clinics. The diabetic retinopathy screening records of Birmingham, Solihull and Black Country Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Programme and the clinic case records, will be used to analyse for any development and progression of diabetic retinopathy in the designated cohort of older people, and link it to possible risk factors. This study will also identify any impediments to screening for diabetic retinopathy in this age group and allow us to answer our research questions.
Potential participants will be identified by Dr Bellary and Professor Gibson from Diabetic Clinic records and the DR Screening register. Dr Bellary and Professor Gibson will then write to the potential participants and ask them to consider allowing their data to be used in the study. Their willingness to participate will be confirmed by signing a form and returning it in a pre-paid envelope. The letter will inform them that the letter will be followed up after two weeks with a telephone call.
