  • Research summary

This research project will provide an in-depth understanding of a new Rehabilitation and Recovery Service (R&R) for people with severe and enduring mental health needs and uses a method called 'photo elicitation'. Photo elicitation is a method in which participants are invited to take photographs in order to express their experience around the topic of investigation. The photographs are then used in research interviews in order to facilitate detailed discussions. The aim of the study is to provide an in-depth understanding of the experience of service users and staff to complement ongoing quantitative service evaluation. Participants in this study will be 18 years and over and either current service users (n~16) or staff members (n~8) within The Trust, including inpatient service and community partners. Participants will be recruited via the Leeds and York Partnership Trust (LYPT) Rehabilitation and Recovery Service. An introductory meeting to clarify the project, answer questions and provide digital equipment, if required, will take place between participant and researcher. Service users will have opportunity to discuss the study with their support worker and other supportive adults. A time-frame will be agreed in which the photographs will be taken (approximately 1 week) and an interview date set where the participant and researcher will meet to discuss the meanings attached to the photographs. Interviews will be audio-recorded and take place on and off-site. Where interviews are off-site, a safety protocol will be followed. Staff and service users have been involved in the design of the project from the outset and were invited to provide feedback on study materials, including information sheets. These materials have been adjusted based on feedback provided. The projects timings and interview content will be refined through pilot interviews with at least one service user and one member of staff.
