  • Research summary

Hearing aids are the first line of intervention for hearing loss (Laplante-Lévesque et al., 2010b). Despite evidence for benefits of hearing aid use, 54% of adult patients use their hearing aids fewer than 4 hours per day, three months after their first hearing aid fitting (Stark & Hickson, 2004).

The I-PLAN is the first intervention in audiology that was developed using the behavioural change wheel (Barker et al., 2016). It consists of three components; i) provision of written information regarding consequences of using a hearing aid and not using a hearing aid, ii) the provision of a physical prompt for the purpose of prompting or cueing the behavior (hearing aid use) development and iii) creation of a written behavioural plan for hearing aid use. To our knowledge, the I-PLAN has yet to be evaluated. The present study, therefore, aims to investigate an implementation of the I-PLAN intervention materials to promote hearing aid use among adult hearing aid patients.
