Research summary
Computer-based tools are commonly used in healthcare practice to inform and guide treatment decisions and lifestyle behaviours. Mobile health technology use is increasing, with self-monitoring mobile apps commonplace due to their ability to reach a large number of people. In 2016, seven billion mobile subscriptions were recorded worldwide with 90% of people in developing countries and 96% globally using mobile devices. Therefore, using mobile health technologies can be a useful way of encouraging patients to self-manage aspects of their own health and lifestyle.
The main aim of this study is to develop an exercise-focused self-management (SM) app for lung cancer survivors to improve their symptoms of breathlessness, fatigue and depression. This is necessary to improve the health and wellbeing of this population group and to decrease pressure on NHS services and health professionals working within it, by encouraging lung cancer survivors to self-manage aspects of their care. Reducing pressure on the health care service has the potential to be cost-saving as patient care is moved from the secondary care setting into the community.
