Research summary
Fasting during the month of Ramadan is an integral part of the Muslim religion. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is rising in this population and is associated with a seven fold increased risk of severe hypoglycaemia and hospitalisation during Ramadan. ‘A Safer Ramadan’ is an education programme that has three components: group education for Muslims who have type 2 diabetes and fast during Ramadan, support for healthcare professionals and community engagement delivered by community members to the wider community.
The aim of this study is to carry out a qualitative evaluation of the ‘A Safer Ramadan’ programme in order to assess the impact and acceptability of the implementation of the programme in two sites across the East Midlands (Northampton and Leicester).
The study will employ qualitative research methodologies and conduct one-to-one telephone or face-to-face interviews with patients, healthcare professionals and stakeholders who have been involved in the implementation of the ‘A Safer Ramadan’ programme. As the study is qualitative, there is no rigid sample size but we hope to interview 30 people in each category, so approximately 90 people all together. The data will be analysed using thematic analysis.
