  • Research summary

We plan to evaluate the clinical and radiographic (x-rays) outcomes of four traumatic injuries to permanent (adult) teeth in children and adolescents; intrusion (tooth pushed up into the socket), extrusion (tooth drops down from the socket), luxation (tooth pushed towards palate or lip) and complicated crown fractures (broken tooth with involvement of the nerve).

Successful treatment of these injuries in a growing child patient is dependent on many factors, some related to the injury itself and some to the treatment provided. The aim of our study is to evaluate some of these important factors and to see how they influence the success or failure of treatment of these injuries. Moreover, we also plan to study these factors individually and in combination with each other by using statistical modelling.

To achieve this we will go through patient records from June 2003-June 2013 and identify patients who have received treatment in Paediatric Dentistry Trauma Clinics at the Leeds Dental Institute. Patients with the four types of injuries will be identified. The researchers will go through the patient records and retrieve information from these using a pre-designed proforma to capture important information according to the protocol. By doing this we will be able to identify some key factors which might affect the outcome (survival, success, failure) of these four injuries.
