Research summary
Trace elements are present in the blood of healthy people in tiny concentrations. In a number of important diseases, trace element concentrations can be abnormal and it is often necessary to measure their levels in the biochemistry laboratory. Currently, we have to compare these measured levels to values obtained with published reference data. Many of these ranges are from very small, very old studies and are likely to not be representative of trace element concentrations in the blood of healthy people now. We need to establish reference ranges using our own analytical procedures and to include larger numbers of subjects. We plan to collect blood samples from healthy individuals to allow us to generate reference ranges for blood trace elements that are valid, accurate and contemporary.
