  • Research summary

Diabetic foot ulcers are a serious problem, not only for the person with the foot ulcer but also the NHS. Prevention is very important. However, patient education alone doesn’t work and evidence of treatments to aid healing is unclear. A promising face to face psychological programme has been developed to help patients change some of the behavioural and psychological factors that are associated with increased risk for developing foot ulcers. However, for patients to get the most benefit from this intervention, these changes need to be maintained. The current study aims to inform the development and evaluation of an intervention that helps patients with diabetes to maintain these changes in the long-term. The current project aims to use qualitative research to explore patients’ perceptions of a plan of the proposed intervention. This is to ensure that the intervention that is developed is acceptable and useful to patients, and that the way in which it is evaluated is relevant to patients’ experiences and their use of health care services.
