Research summary
Recent years have seen an increase in research looking at all aspects of treatment outcomes from a patient perspective. However, there is still a lack of evidence in the literature regarding the effects of orthodontic (dental brace) treatment and the evidence which does exist is equivocal; there is therefore a need to understand the outcomes and factors which affect these outcomes more fully. In due course, this may allow us to have a better understanding of factors which ultimately influence satisfaction with orthodontic treatment.
At a time when orthodontic treatment is increasingly under threat in the National Health Service, it is important to have a full understanding of the outcomes associated with treatment. Therefore this interview based qualitative study will investigate how patients perceive the outcomes of treatment and the resultant effects. The study will also include the parental perspective as parents/guardians often provide feedback during the post-treatment phase.
The aim of this qualitative study is to investigate the outcomes associated with orthodontic treatment from the perspective of the patients themselves and also from a parental perspective. The study will be undertaken in the orthodontic department of a large teaching hospital with a high throughput of patients and those who completed their treatment when they were 18 years old or under will be included as the majority of orthodontic patients treated within the NHS will be in this age group.
