Research summary
BXO is a skin condition that affects the foreskin. Most boys are told they need a circumcision to treat this condition but there is an alternative which preserves the foreskin. The alternative operation (a preputioplasty) has not been thoroughly evaluated so it is difficult to advise boys and families about the operations. A proper research study is needed to find out how well the preputioplasty operation works and the downsides of the procedure. A feasibility study (CVP-4-BXO) has already been done to see if boys and families would be willing to be in a research study to compare circumcison and preputioplasty. Before a large research study can be done it is important to know what boys and families think about the option of preputioplasty to treat BXO. It is also important to know what surgeons think: not many surgeons offer the choice of a preputioplasty and some of them think it is not a good treatment for BXO.
This qualitative study has two parts. Part One: experienced qualitative researchers will talk to boys and families who had the choice of preputioplasty or circumcision to treat BXO. The aim is to learn what they think about the options and what the outcome measures for a study could be. Part two: the researchers will host focus groups with surgeons to identify what makes surgeons reluctant to offer preputioplasty as a treatment and to identify which outcome measures they consider to be important for a study comparing circumcision with preputioplasty.REC name
