  • Research summary

The aim of this project is to design an intervention to minimize the distress and psychological sequelae of postoperative delirium(POD), which is an acute confusional state that can occur in some after an operation. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted in two groups of participants:

Group 1) Older people who have recovered from post operative delirium (POD).

Group 2) Relatives and/or carers of those who have recovered from POD.

The research questions set out for the project are as follows:
1)What has been the experience of those who have experienced POD?
2)What could be done to improve the experience of those who experience POD?

The study will involve interviewing 10 older people who have experienced POD and 6-8 relatives or carers who have observed the episode of POD.Demographic data will be collected. The rationale for using the two Groups of participants is to gather information on how the experience can be improved for all those that may be impacted by an episode of POD.

The results of this study will inform an exploration of expert views on the evidence base for interventions, which may be appropriate in this setting. This will involve a Modified Delphi process using current evidence and expert opinion to reach a consensus on a testable intervention. The qualitative project and the Modified Delphi process will inform a future randomised controlled study to then assess the effectiveness of the designed intervention.
