Research summary
People with Type two diabetes (T2D) have higher risks for serious and debilitating illnesses. T2D is common, with a prevalence of around 7% in the UK population. The quality of T2D care is inconsistent across the UK and Greater Manchester does not currently achieve NICE treatment targets. Barriers to delivery of care include low attendance and poor engagement with local T2D interventions which tend to consist of programmes of education delivered in traditional, face to face clinical settings. Thus, a flexible approach to T2D management that is accessible to people from different backgrounds and communities is needed. MyDiabetesMyWay (MDMW) is a digitial platform that offers a comprehensive self-management and educational programme that should be accessible to a wide range of people through a mobile app and website. Building on evidence generated by a Scotland-wide pilot study, MDMW is being rolled out and tested across Greater Manchester as part of a wider NHS/Innovate UK testbed study and the exploration of engagement and accessibility of the system to users is an important part of this evaluation. All patients with type 2 diabetes living in GM will be offered free use of MDMW and from this sample, we will recruit participants from GP surgeries and outpatient clinics. We will conduct a maximum of 45 interviews and two focus groups with patients and clinicians to collect data relating to acceptability of MDMW and analyse this data using a qualitative template approach, informed by the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability (TFA). Participants will be asked to take part in one interview or focus group between August and December 2019. The findings from this study will provide an insight into the ways in which stakeholders engage with MDMW and how to improve implementation of T2D self-management interventions within diverse populations.
