Research summary
This prospective, observational study will review the use of NMB and time of recovery of morbidly obese patients following laparoscopic bariatric surgery in different NHS hospital sites in the UK. The results of this study will provide data to establish current patient flow in this group of surgical patients and inform future surgeons, anaesthetists and other stakeholders striving for improved post-surgical recovery and efficient use of operating theatre and recovery unit capacities.
Anonymised data will be collected from approximately 120 patients, both retrospectively from a review of the patient’s medical notes to determine the underlying diagnosis, medications taken and clinical characteristics, and prospectively from the point of administration of general anaesthesia prior to the operation to when patients are transferred to the ward, high dependency unit (HDU) or intensive care unit (ICU) following surgery. The choice of a prospective study design is to allow real-time documentation of surgical and anaesthetic procedures and post-operative recovery of patients at each hospital site, including details which may not always be routinely or consistently documented in the medical record.
