Research summary
The Acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) connects the collar bone (clavicle) to the shoulder blade. Injuries to this joint can often occur after a fall on an outstretched hand. Treatment usually involves using a simple sling to support the arm but may sometimes involve surgery. \nThe aim of this study is to collect information on the moderate to severe ACJ injuries in adults (over 18 years old) that are often considered for operations. Operations for this injury may include different types of surgery involving the use of metal implants (pins, screws, and plates), artificial ligaments, sutures or wires. Previous studies have largely been undertaken in single hospitals and therefore don’t give us the broad overview of how well patients improve after treatment. It is not currently known how many patients are being offered surgery for these injuries and how well they are performing after treatment. The study will collect information on what treatments are currently being offered within hospitals and assess how well participants get back to their normal activities following their treatment. The choice of treatment would be made between clinician and patient and at no point will being in this study affect what treatment the participant will receive. Participants will be asked to complete questionnaires either by post, telephone or electronically via email at the time of injury, at 6 months and 1 year. All hospitals within North East and Cumbria who provide trauma care will be involved in the study and patients will be asked to take part (recruited) over a 1 year period. \n
