Research summary
High salt (sodium) in the blood (hypernatraemia) is common in critically ill patients and has been associated with a increased risk of death in many retrospective cohort studies. There is a lack of prospective research, meaning it is unclear if hypernatraemia causes or is just associated with an increased risk of death. This study is a retrospective cohort study of critically ill patients with and without hypernatraemia, using a statistical technique called propensity score matching to reduce confounding, meaning any difference in survival between the groups is more likely to be only due to hypernatraemia and not other factors (confounders). This study will use retrospective data from patients admitted to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary intensive care unit between 2011 and 2018. Data will be anonymised before analysis.
