Research summary
In epidemiological research, pilot studies are a necessary first step in exploring the utility of newly acquired data sets. The primary aim of this project is to examine the feasibility of undertaking large scale genetic studies of oral health disorders using recently acquired National Services Scotland (NSS) Information Services Division (ISD) Scottish morbidity records (SMR) and general practitioner dental records within the Generation Scotland: Scottish Family Health Study (GS:SFHS) cohort. These data are amongst the most comprehensive that are available for a neglected aspect of health with substantial direct and indirect health impacts and cost. The GS: SFHS cohort is richly phenotyped for most other common causes of physical and mental health. This project will benefit substantially from that prior annotation.
In this project we plan to profile NSS ISD oral health records of participants within GS:SFHS. A pilot study will then be undertaken to determine whether we have adequate number of records to provide the statistical power needed to unravel environmental and genetic risk factors for oral health disorders within the cohort.
The results from this pilot study will be then used support grant applications for a larger scale studies within the cohort. Furthermore, a cohort profile based on the ISD oral health records will be published in a peer-reviewed journal, and presented at national and international conferences.REC name
