Research summary
Early Positive Approaches to Support (E-PAtS) is an 8 session group programme for adult family caregivers who have a young child (0-5) who has a learning or developmental disability. The programme is delivered by a trained family caregiver and professional working together. The programme aims to support caregiver’s emotional wellbeing and give them practical strategies for helping their child’s development. In this study we want to see whether it is possible to deliver E-PAtS for families who have been recruited from a health care provider. Questions for the study include whether it is possible to recruit enough families to run two groups and whether families can attend all sessions. We also want to get an initial idea of outcomes for caregivers who attend the programme. The study aims to recruit 24 family caregivers to take part and attend one of 2 E-PAtS programmes that will be delivered. Families will be selected at random to attend either a first group or one that immediately follows this so that all families access E-PAtS in the study. Participants will be asked to complete some questionnaires on three occasions that ask about their perceptions of parenting and their child and the experience of accessing the E-PAtS group. Findings from the study will be used to inform the development of a larger study in the future.
