  • Research summary

This study forms a part of a wider doctoral programme of work that aims to develop a new care model that integrates and makes better use of pharmacists to support the management of adult patients diagnosed with asthma. This model has the potential to improve patients’ quality of life, enhance patient satisfaction and improve the patient experience.

This study has three phases, a retrospective case note review of patients’ medical notes, interviews with patients and finally, interviews with stakeholders. All case notes and patients will be drawn from one medical practice.

Case note review: A retrospective case note review of medical records of adult asthma patients held in the medical practice will be undertaken. The review will take place in the medical practice and will last for a period of six months.

Patient interviews: A twenty minute face-to-face or telephone interview will be undertaken with adult asthma patients. The interviews will be undertaken at the medical practice or over the phone.

Stakeholder interviews: A twenty minute face-to-face or telephone interview will be undertaken with stakeholders including: community and hospital pharmacists, pharmacists based in GP practices, independent prescriber pharmacists, respiratory consultants and service commissioners in the North West of England, as well as adult asthma patients from the previous phase who agree to take part. The interviews will be undertaken at the medical practice (for patients) or participants' natural setting or over the phone.
