  • Research summary

This project will look at patients' understanding of their process of recovery in secure services. Recovery can be defined as ‘a deeply personal process of changing one’s attitudes, values, feelings, goals, skills and roles. It is a way of living a satisfying life even with limitations caused by illness. Recovery involves the development of new meaning and purpose in one’s life as one grows beyond the catastrophic effects of mental health difficulties.

Forensic services offer unique challenges to the recovery approach (Drennan & Alred, 2012). Developing recovery-oriented forensic services appear to be lagging behind (Drennan & Wooldridge, 2014).

The aim is to develop a model describing patients’ understanding of their process of recovery. Service users who are currently in a secure unit that are nearing to discharge or who have been discharged and are now living in the community, will be invited to take part in an interview lasting up to two hours to talk about their personal experience of their recovery. Interviews will take place in an NHS location (e.g., The Bracton Centre site for Oxleas). The interviews will be analysed using qualitative analysis, specifically a grounded theory approach.
