Research summary
This research is being conducted within a mental health inpatient rehabilitation service for adults. Our service often wants to measure whether people are progressing with their mental health recovery. There are currently no questionnaires validated to assess people's feelings about their mental health recovery whilst in inpatient rehabilitation. Having validated questionnaires is important because it allows healthcare professionals and patients to track changes in their feelings towards their mental health recovery over time, and therefore assess whether their treatment has been successful. This research aims to validate an existing questionnaire about recovery for use in inpatient rehabilitation settings: the Questionnaire about the Process of Recovery. Patients complete this questionnaire as part of their treatment as usual, and this research aims to analyse this data to see whether the measure is valid in this population (the quantitative component). Patients will also be invited to complete an interview about their perspectives on whether the measure captures meaningful aspects to their recovery (the qualitative component). It is estimated that 150 patients will complete a QPR which can be analysed for the quantitative component. It is estimated that 10 patients will complete an interview for the qualitative component. Quantitative data will be analysed using a factor analysis (which shows whether the questionnaire has any subscales which assess different parts of recovery), response distribution for floor and ceiling effects (which show whether lots of people score at the maximum or minimum on the questionnaire) and a measure of internal consistency (whether the items on the questionnaire correlate with each other and seem to measure the same thing). Qualitative interviews will be analysed using thematic analysis, which picks out key themes in the interviews.
