Research summary
Aim: to show necessity of a newly developed Mental Health Risk Assessment, screening questionnaire (MHRA-N) filled out by parents/carers of children and young people with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) and / or Severe Communication Difficulties (SCD) by comparison with the currently used Risk Assessment questionnaire, MHRA-C). A clinical questionnaire (Q-clinical), will provide us with life-events, positive and negative to see to what extent they are reflected in both risks assessments.
Study population: Parent / carers of children and young people between the ages of 6 – 18 diagnosed with SLD and / or SCD, under the care of a CAMHS-LD team of Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
Methods: Both questionnaires (MHRA-N & MHRA-C) and the Q-clinical will be filled out by parents/carers of the children, NOT by the children, young people themselves after written consent has been obtained of them.
Measurements are done after consent forms have been received. If the clinical need requires the risk assessments to be done more frequently, this will be encouraged for both questionnaires.
Critical incidents, self-injury, hospital or GP visits and other risk events in the target group are collated in order to calculate Mental Health Risk predictive values for both MHRA-N and MHRA-C.
An additional questionnaire (Q-Clinical) is designed for this purpose, to be filled out by carers and responsible clinicians.Data collection will happen over a 2-3 month period. Data analysis focussed on efficiency, practicality and predictive factors.
Results will be presented at the CAMHS-LD network group. A summary will be sent to all participating parents / carers and clinicians.
