  • Research summary

The research forms the basis of the researcher's, (Rosemary McCracken) PhD thesis, and where the Chief investigator is her primary supervisor, Dr Virginia Eatough. The study aims to examine the experience of men who have been diagnosed and are living with male breast cancer ( MBC). It will look at how they make sense of their diagnosis of this rare disease over time and live with the results of surgery and ongoing treatment to manage reoccurrence. The aim is to provide information on how men understand and make sense of their experience, to reflect upon and identify their support needs in order to contribute to and advance existing specialist and non-specialist support services. An aim is to raise awareness of MBC in the general and medical domains and to gather research information that can be used to identify patient needs and secure their well being.

The study would like to recruit men at stages 1-3 MBC and who are aged 40-80 years approximately. Participants will be recruited from the Royal Marsden Hospital( Sutton and Chelsea sites), University College Hospital( Euston Rd, London) and St George's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Additionally, the researcher will advertise the study through patient support groups to encourage voluntary contact and participation with the study. The study is longitudinal and consists of three interview stages. The first stage aims to interview 12 participants on a 1:1 basis for approximately one hour. Following this first interview, 4-5 participants will be selected for two further interviews. These will be conducted at two six- monthly intervals after the first interview has taken place.
