Research summary
Considering the high rates of relapse among people who have gone through traditional treatment programmes for substance dependency a new approach is needed within treatment services. The new approach should (a) reduce the high rates of relapse, (b) be cost-effective, and (c) address individuals’ real-life problems in their natural environment (apart from substance misuse per se). Moving On In My Recovery (MOIMR) aims to meet each of these objectives. It is a 12-session, acceptance-based group programme that was co-produced and is co-facilitated by treatment professionals and service users in recovery. The aim of MOIMR is to bridge the gap between formal treatment provision and mutual aid. This project has wide-reaching potential. The MOIMR programme has recently been introduced into mainstream Substance Misuse Services within Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The proposed study is a feasibility study to explore the impact of a novel and cost-effective intervention in substance-use treatment and recovery. In Phase 1 of the study, participants will be asked to complete pre-assessment questionnaires. In Phase 2, 13 weeks later and upon finishing the programme, they will be asked to complete the same questionnaires and to attend an interview to explore any benefits they derived from this programme and whether it met their expectations. In Phase 3, these assessments will be undertaken again at a further 3 month follow-up. Participants who drop-out of the programme will be also offered to attend an interview.
