Research summary
Reserch Summary
Many individuals across the world experience suicidal thoughts and engage in suicidal behaviour. In response, we have developed a number of ways to help people recover. However, we do not have an agreement on what recovery from suicidality (suicidal thoughts and behaviours) looks like, nor do we agree on what is most helpful for recovery. As such, we cannot fully measure how good our attempts to help people recover are. Nor do we know whether we are helping people in the best way we can.
To try to understand what recovery from suicidality looks like and what may help individuals to recover, researchers have asked people about their experience of overcoming suicidality. They have found that recovery is a personal experience, and that there are many factors that can help individuals to recover. We therefore felt that an important next step would be to bring together all this research, with the aim of developing an agreement on what recovery from suicidality looks like and what factors may help recovery. To do this we felt it would be important to ask those with lived experience of suicidal thoughts and behaviours.
We are aiming to conduct a two round Delphi study, where those with lived experience will be asked to rate a series of statements about recovery and factors that support people to recover. These statements will be developed through a review of existing literature, policy documents, reports, dissertations and websites of interest. A group of individuals with lived experience will review the list of statements generated prior to us commencing recruitment. The study will be completed online, and we are looking to recruit around 150 individuals living in the United Kingdom.
