  • Data collection arrangements

Indications for referral for dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scanning, scan results (e.g. bone density) alongside demographic factors (e.g. height, weight, body mass index, body fat percentage, age, gender), risk factors (e.g. smoking status), any fractures and their location and any treatment will be recorded for each scan. This data will be anonymised and thus not be traceable back to the individual patient and it will be stored in password protected Hospital Trust databases. This data will be analysed to ascertain more information regarding osteoporosis, fragility fractures, risk factors and help guide future management options.

  • Research programme

The community supported by the database will be individuals referred for DEXA scanning, people living with osteoporosis/osteopenia and individuals who acquired fragility fractures. Analysis of this data will help us understand important predictors for fragility fractures, important indications for DEXA scanning and will also shed light on effective management options for patients with reduced bone mineral density.
