  • Research summary

What is the most ideal core outcome set (COS) to measure the effectiveness of exercise referral schemes for people with persistent musculoskeletal (MSK) pain?

Project aims:  To develop a core outcome set to measure the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of an exercise and physical activity referral scheme pathway.

    Methods:
This study will be developed, conducted, and reported in accordance with COMET guidance for the reporting of domain concepts (i.e. the back active/stay active pathway) (Williamson et al 2012).

    Outline of Study design:
This project will be conducted in 3 key stages as follows:
a.First, a scoping review will locate effectiveness and cost-effectiveness trials investigating exercise referral schemes in order to identify all outcomes assessed.
b.Second, a consensus process with key stakeholders will be undertaken to discuss, prioritise, reduce and agree a final COS which will be used to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of exercise referral schemes. Key stakeholders will include patients, health care professionals, fitness instructors, healthcare managers, commissioners and researchers.
c.Finally, rapid literature searches will identify and assess properties of existing instruments (outcome measures or tests) which are valid and reliable measures of the outcomes identified above (from the consensus workshop). Measures identified will be matched with the outcomes from the consensus workshop.
