Research summary
\nThis pilot project is evaluating the provision of a new 12 session psychotherapy group for two groups of up to 15 people who self-harm (aged 16 and over). This group will be a mixture of Compassion focused therapy (CFT) (Gilbert, 2010) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) (Sutton, 2004). We will be exploring cycles of self-harm, thoughts, emotions and behaviours, compassion, self-soothing and mindfulness. This is with a view to improving emotional wellbeing, increase self-compassion and coping strategies. The Psychotherapy group intervention will be designed and supervised by the project lead. \n\nParticipants of the psychotherapy groups will be people living or working in Salford who self-harm and are 16+. This study will take place at the University of Salford, Mary Seacole Building in the Counselling and Psychotherapy suite.\n\nTwo qualified and very experienced psychotherapy lecturers will be working with two students from the MSc Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy to facilitate the groups. A further four students have agreed to complete for their dissertations;\n1)\tA literature review\n2)\tQuantitative analysis of the three questionnaires.\n3)\tAnalysis of a diary content on episodes of self-harm and care received.\n4)\tQuestions will be Co-produced with the participants of the psychotherapy group and then a qualitative focus group will be facilitated to explore the effects of this.\n\nThe research project will be supervised by the project lead and fund holder applicant of this form who is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Salford. \n\nThe study will last for 12 months with the participants being asked to participate in the research at the start of the group, during the group by sharing their diaries about self-harm, at the end (session 12) and then 6 and 12 months later. \n\n
