Research summary
Falls are a leading cause of accidental injury and mortality worldwide. The cost of treating fall related injuries each year is exponential, thus demonstrating the need for preventative intervention and further research. Numerous functional tests have been developed to assess mobility and falls risk in individuals 65 years and older, however fewer research studies have investigated falls risk within younger populations. The current research aims to understand fall risk factors that may be identified in both male and female individuals aged between 46 and 64 years. This population is being examined as previously, prevalence studies have reported higher fall-related injuries in women, however fatality from falls are a significant problem with the male population. By identifying potential fall risk factors throughout the study, the design and development of a fall risk screening tool may be possible allowing individuals at risk of falling to be identified at a younger age.
We will recruit 30 male and 30 female individuals with a history of non-injurious falls within the 12 months preceding the study, 30 male and 30 female individuals with a history of injurious falls and 60 healthy age matched controls. All participants will undergo a whole body DEXA scan, muscle function measurements and various functional balance assessments.
