Research summary
Tumour-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare condition that causes soft and weak bones, low blood phosphate level and high urine phosphate excretion. It is caused by the release of a hormone, fibroblast growth factor (FGF23) by a tumour. These tumours are atypically slow-growing, small and located in obscure sites. The diagnosis is therefore frequently delayed or missed and results in complications. The number of people living with TIO was estimated to be no more than 0.7 per 100,000 persons. A recent study reviewed the published literature and identified only about 2000 cases were reported. The only curative treatment is complete surgical removal of the tumour.
Gallium-68-DOTA-Tyr3-Octreotate(68Ga-DOTATATE) positron emission tomography/ computed tomography(PET/CT) is a newly developed scanning technique, that helps to detect those tumours. Studies have shown it has better performance accuracy then traditional imaging technique and was advocated as the first-line imaging.
However, potential numerous false alarms (false positive) and the limited availability of of 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT restrict its widespread use. Data on real-world clinical utility remains limited and guidance on the optimal use of this imaging technique is needed. The aim of the retrospective study is to evaluate the diagnostic performance of 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT in patients with suspected TIO, factors affecting the diagnostic performance and the clinical utility of 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT.REC name
