Research summary
In this technical pilot study we wish to perform two magnetic resonance image acquisitions at the end of a routine Magnetic Resonance breast imaging protocol. Six women, who have been booked to have an MR scan of the breasts will be recruited by their surgeon at the Belfast Trust. At the end of their routine MR imaging, carried out at the Mater Hospital, Belfast, which takes between 30 and 45 minutes and we wish to add two additional breathold scanning sequences on the end of this (additional 10-15 minutes). After routine imaging a volumetric interpolated breathold examination (VIBE) sequence lasting 20 seconds will be carried out whilst the subject is lying on their front (prone). The subject will be re-positioned to lie on their back and a new VIBE sequence will be performed (supine). Anonymised image data will be retrieved from the MR scanner and transferred to Ulster University by password protected DVD for image assessment and 3D processing. The outcomes of this pilot study are whether or not the MR imaging was successful and if 3D computer and physical models could be created from the resultant image data to aid surgical treatment.
