Research summary
It is essential to monitor wounds to assess for progress of wound healing to ensure the wound therapy is being effective. Currently wound healing is monitored by measurements of the overall size of the wound. This is undertaken by the nurse using a sterile paper ruler amd recording the measurement at the longest and widest point. This system of measurement is prone to error and therefore fails to provide accurate wound dimensions which can be compared between nurses. There is currently no reliable way to measure the depth of the wound or wound volume. The camera intended for use in the study takes a 3D image of the wound and will provide a more accurate measure of the width, length and depth of the wound allowing a total wound volume to be recorded, which would allow prompt recognition of a wound that is failing to progress with healing or is deteriorating and increasing in size.
