  • Research summary

The purpose of the research is to gain an understanding of parents' experiences following their child's burn injury. This information may then be used to later develop and co-produce with a group of parents, a resource for other parents of children and potentially staff who work with them, following their child's burn injury. The principle research question is: What are the experiences of parents of children with burn injuries? It would be useful to gain a deeper understanding of support needs of family members, to help parents and their children to build resilience and overcome obstacles following a burn injury.
Those eligible to participate are as follows:
    - All parents who have come into the burns service in the last year (2016), this may increase to two years (2015 and 2016) or three years (2014-2016), depending on initial uptake of participants (opportunity sample).
    - Parents of inpatients who have had a hospital stay of more than 3 days
    - Parents of patients already discharged from inpatient ward
    - All participants must be able to converse in English in order to ensure that they understand the questions being asked and what other parents are saying, within the focus group, and also so that they can adequately convey their beliefs and perceptions during discussion.
The research will be carried out at most likely Pinderfields Hospital but may be carried out at Dewsbury or Pontefract Hospitals. There is also a possibility the research may be carried out at a local community centre/school.
Participants will be involved in a focus group, allowing open discussion regarding recovery, which parents may find useful following their child's experience of a burn injury. Focus groups will last no longer than 1.5 hours.
