Research summary
In September 2024, National Deaf CAMHS (NDCAMHS) launched an 18-month pilot – 18-25 Deaf Mental Health Assessment service (18-25 DMHAS) - specifically aimed at deaf adults aged 18-25, across the Yorkshire and Humber area of England. The pilot service, jointly funded by Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LYPFT) and NHS England, is due to end on 31st March 2026. NHS England and the NHS Trust have directly commissioned the University of Manchester’s SORD (Social Research with Deaf People) group to carry out a small research study on this pilot service focussing on its effectiveness over a 12-month period (end date 31st March 2026). The research project has several aspects two of which require this application. (i) secondary data analysis of pseudonymised routinely collected data held by the service on referral, treatment and outcomes of patients extracted from the Electronic Patient Record Care Director and transferred by secure platform; (ii) primary data collected from any patients of the service who consent. Patients invited to participate must be deaf, 17 to 25 years old and using the 18-25 DMHAS. To take part, they must be able to decide for themselves to answer a questionnaire or be interviewed (or both) on a voluntary basis. Anonymous questionnaires will use an online format and interviews will take place using MS Teams or Zoom. Results from the study will inform NHS England's decision on the continuation and expansion of such a service on a national basis.
