  • Research summary

This is a follow up of a study done in the 1990's comparing two types of repairs for stress urinary incontinence using the patients own tissue. The results of the primary study were published in the International Journal of Urogynaecology in 2007. Our study aims to obtain a 15 year follow up of these patients.
Surgical repair of stress urinary incontinence can be done using foreign material like mesh as well as patients own tissue. Over the last few years with increasing popularity and ease of mesh repair, use of patients tissue(autologous slings) was less practised. However, in recent days, due to rising complication rates reported with the use of foreign material, there is an increasing value in following up this cohort of patients who had autologous sling repairs.
All patients who participated in the initial study will be contacted and consent requested. They will also be send a postal questionnaire. We will await response for 4 weeks. If no response is obtained, the research team will make telephone contact and request consent for filling the questionnaire over telephone if appropriate.
The outcome measures will be assessment of symptoms using validated scores as well as patient satisfaction rates and requirement of any additional treatment following primary surgery.
